Where Tech Hurts
When Everyone Gets the Crutch
The strongest, most consistent evidence base on assistive reading/writing technology is about students with a documented disability. For students without one, the same meta-analyses that support TTS for dyslexia are silent or cautionary — and the broader literature on tool dependency is a real concern.
What the evidence says — and where it's still being worked out
A PMC meta-analysis on text-to-speech and reading comprehension found real benefit for students with reading disabilities, but also flagged that more research is needed on presentational features (like highlighting) and noted the evidence base is built almost entirely on students with documented reading difficulties — not the general student population.
Separately, qualitative research on dyslexic students' long-term experience with assistive technology is "relatively sparse and short-term," meaning even the well-supported benefits are less understood over multi-year use than the headline findings suggest. And for dictation software specifically, effectiveness depends on the student being able to speak clearly and use voice commands — a real practical limitation, not just a theoretical one.

→Who at LMSD reviews whether a student still needs an assistive tool, versus has outgrown it?
→Does the district track whether students with documented LD are actually receiving the assistive tools specified in their plans — separate from the general 1:1 device rollout?
→Will an opt-out policy preserve required accommodations for students with documented learning disabilities?
