When the Tool Fits the Need

A Tool, Not a Default

Text-to-speech (TTS) and speech-to-text (STT) were built to bypass a specific bottleneck — decoding for a dyslexic reader, handwriting for a student with dysgraphia. The research support is real. But the same research is consistently about targeted use, not blanket deployment to a whole classroom regardless of who actually has a documented need.

Where Tech Hurts

When Everyone Gets the Crutch

The strongest, most consistent evidence base on assistive reading/writing technology is about students with a documented disability. For students without one, the same meta-analyses that support TTS for dyslexia are silent or cautionary — and the broader literature on tool dependency is a real concern.

What the evidence says — and where it's still being worked out

A PMC meta-analysis on text-to-speech and reading comprehension found real benefit for students with reading disabilities, but also flagged that more research is needed on presentational features (like highlighting) and noted the evidence base is built almost entirely on students with documented reading difficulties — not the general student population.

Separately, qualitative research on dyslexic students' long-term experience with assistive technology is "relatively sparse and short-term," meaning even the well-supported benefits are less understood over multi-year use than the headline findings suggest. And for dictation software specifically, effectiveness depends on the student being able to speak clearly and use voice commands — a real practical limitation, not just a theoretical one.

What This Means for LMSD

Accommodation, Not Default Setting

The research case for text-to-speech and speech-to-text is real — and it is a case for documented, individualized accommodation, not for making every Chromebook's read-aloud and autocorrect tools the default learning method for every child. A policy that can't tell the difference risks doing both: under-serving the student who needs a specific tool, and over-relying on tools for students who'd build stronger skills without them.

Questions worth asking at the next Policy Committee meeting

  • Are text-to-speech and speech-to-text tools provided only to students with a documented IEP/504 need, or to the general student population by default?
  • Who at LMSD reviews whether a student still needs an assistive tool, versus has outgrown it?
  • Does the district track whether students with documented LD are actually receiving the assistive tools specified in their plans — separate from the general 1:1 device rollout?
  • Will an opt-out policy preserve required accommodations for students with documented learning disabilities?
